On the first week of July 2023, the Youth Athletic Program was launched for students aged 12 to 18 years old seeking to improve their knowledge, technical skills and self-confidence. The summer camp brought lots of enthusiasm to the community and began with over 20 participants from different schools in Bequia.
The main goals were to keep the kids active, teach friendly competition and introduce healthy habits so it can be kept as they grow up. Obesity among children in the Caribbean is increasing at a very rapid rate. Food choice is part of it, though physical inactivity is primarily what is driving the obesity epidemic.
The Youth Athletic Program was founded by Simon Bluteau, owner of United Fitness & Wellness, Bequia’s first commercial gym on the island. With the help and guidance of personal trainer Rex Pollard, they provided classes from Monday to Friday, taking place at the United Fitness & Wellness facility and the Clive Tannis Playing Field.
To say the program was successful is an understatement. Students attended, participated, and came back for more. The reason is because the programming is fun and dynamic; the leaders are skilled, and exceptionally positive mentors.
Due to the increasing demand, we are looking to extend the classes year-long and include an additional group for the 8 to 12 years old. For more, as well as sponsorship opportunities, email me at glen.herbert@grenadinesinitiative.org
