Responding to the hurricane

While power is still down in many areas, hampering communication, we continue to get updates on the effects of Hurricane Beryl. Our hearts go out to all within the path of the storm, particularly those on Carriacou, Union Island and Mayreau, who were hit so severely.

The immediate needs, aside from power, are food and temporary shelter. Bequia is running out of food, and food that has been in cold storage is getting warm and ruined.

For those who have already reached out with support, we thank you very much. We are accepting donations to help with relief efforts, and we’ll work with local organizations and volunteers to deliver supplies, food, water and building materials. I’ve been in touch with local organizations and volunteers, including Rise Up Bequia, Action Bequia, the Community Foundation for SVG, and others. We will pool our efforts and resources, taking direction from those on island.

For those giving in Canada, we can accept online donations through Canada helps by clicking here.

In the US, donations can be sent by Zelle to the Friends of the Grenadines Initiative at lsaganharrier@gmail.com or by PayPal to the Friends of the Grenadines Initiative at stardustbequia@gmail.com

While the situation remains very serious, and will for some time, we are moved by the response. The spirit of the island remains undimmed. People have been working long hours together to help remove debris, cut trees, and clear brush in order to make the roads and paths viable. Others have offered their generators and solar panels to charge phones, knowing that communication and connection are so important.

We’ll continue to offer all that we can. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me with any questions, thoughts, or to note particular areas of need.
